Why hire a private tutor?

The Redmond Mathnasium website states that a private tutor is a short term solution to a long term problem. And that a private tutor will only help the student survive that night's homework.

That's only if you're doing it wrong.

A private tutor (such as myself) should not be a homework babysitter. The student should at least attempt the homework before the tutor arrives. And then have specific questions. The tutor should be able to satisfactorily lead the student to one of the many ways to get the correct answer- math is not that rigid that there is only one way to get the correct answer. And a sampling of further questions should be answered to prove that the student understands the concept and can apply it in a variety of situations. At that point, the tutor should speak to what previous concepts tie into this concept and what future concepts this ties into. My goal is that my students, in theory, need to memorize very little. Almost everything in math can be derived using basic principles with the proper training.

Oh yeah! Why is REDMOND Mathnasium talking about the Texas STAAR test? Asking for a friend.
